Twenty years after exchanging wedding vows, Actors Suriya and Jyotika have chosen to say ‘I do’ again, this time in an intimate Christian-style ceremony that placed their journey together at the centre of the celebration. The couple marked their 20th wedding anniversary in white, with Jyotika dressed in a beautiful bridal gown and Suriya in a white tuxedo. But it was Jyotika’s message about the realities of marriage that made the occasion more meaningful.
Suriya and Jyotika mark their 20th wedding anniversary with ‘love and war’
Sharing a video from the ceremony, Jyotika described the occasion as “THE SEQUEL”, calling it a celebration of 20 years of “love and war”. She went on to explain that the milestone was not about presenting an idealised relationship, but about everything the couple had experienced together over two decades.
“This is not a celebration of a perfect marriage. This is a celebration of imperfections, of adjustments, of understanding, sacrifices, of loving each other selflessly,” Jyotika wrote in her note. She also described Suriya as her husband, the father of their children, her equal, confidant and closest friend.

From co-stars to life partners
Suriya and Jyotika’s relationship began long before their wedding. The two first worked together in the 1999 Tamil film Poovellam Kettuppar and went on to share the screen in several films. Their reel-life pairing eventually became a real-life relationship, culminating in their wedding in Chennai in September 2006.
Their journey also has an interesting connection to the Tamil film Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. The Indian Express recently recalled that Suriya and Jyotika played a married couple in the film, which was released just three days before they got married in real life. The publication described their story as a “reel-to-real journey”, a description that has remained closely associated with the pair.
Suriya and Jyotika’s marriage changed over time
Over the years, the couple has continued to maintain their careers while also building a family together. Suriya and Jyotika have two children, daughter Diya and son Dev. They have also been involved in film production through their company, 2D Entertainment. In recent years, the family moved their primary residence from Chennai to Mumbai for their children’s education. Jyotika has also returned to acting after taking a break from films following her marriage. Her comeback with 36 Vayadhinile in 2015 marked a new phase in her career, followed by films including Magalir Mattum, Raatchasi, Kaathal, The Core and Shaitaan.
Looking ahead to the next 20 years
For Suriya and Jyotika, the vow renewal was less about recreating their wedding day and more about acknowledging everything that happened after it. Jyotika promised to continue choosing positivity, family, health and their relationship while accepting that she, like anyone else, remains an imperfect partner. After two decades together, the couple’s second set of vows offered a simple message: a lasting marriage may not be about perfection, but about continuing to understand, adjust and choose each other through changing phases of life.
