Apple on Monday unveiled a sweeping overhaul of its software ecosystem at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026. Tim Cook, while kicking off the event in California, introduced the next generation of Apple Intelligence and an all-new AI-powered Siri that can understand personal context, perform complex tasks across apps, and provide real-time information from the web.
One of the most significant takeaways from this year’s WWDC was the introduction of iOS 27 and Siri-AI. Apple, during the event, also announced significant upgrades to parental controls, performance improvements across its operating systems, and a host of new features for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Maps.
Apple introduces all-new Siri AI
Apple, while introducing the Siri AI, said the new enhanced integration on the voice assistant system is “profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable” than its predecessor. However, the Siri AI feature will be available on iPhone 16 and later models.
Deeply integrated across Apple’s ecosystem, Siri in the all-new iOS 27 can search through a user`s messages, emails, photos, and other personal content to complete tasks while maintaining privacy through Apple`s on-device and secure cloud architecture.
Apple representative, while introducing the advanced version of voice assistance on the devices, said, “Siri AI can understand personal context, answer questions about what`s on a user`s screen, and even access the web for up-to-date information.”
A dedicated Siri app will allow users to continue previous conversations across devices, with chat histories securely synced through iCloud.
Apple`s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, said, “Apple products are an essential part of people`s lives, and this year we`re bringing powerful new capabilities to empower our users in even more ways.”
More AI-driven features across various applications
Beyond Siri, Apple Intelligence will power a range of AI-driven features across native applications. Users will be able to edit images more intuitively in Photos, browse multiple Safari tabs more efficiently, create AI-generated content in Image Playground, and improve communication in Messages and Mail with smarter writing and productivity tools.
All new parental control
Apple also expanded its focus on child safety with new parental controls and major updates to Screen Time. Parents setting up child accounts will be able to enable age-appropriate protections from the start, decide which apps are accessible, and approve new contacts before children can communicate with them. New communication safety tools can automatically intervene when explicit or violent content is detected.
The software updates also promise significant performance gains across Apple`s platforms. According to the company, iPhone and iPad apps will launch up to 30 per cent faster, newly captured photos will load up to 70 per cent quicker, and AirDrop transfers will be up to 80 per cent faster.
File transfers between external devices become much faster
File transfers between external drives and iPads are now up to five times faster, while switching between cellular and Wi-Fi networks has been made more seamless.
AirPods users can now customise equaliser settings on the go
Apple, while unveiling the features, also had some great news for the music fanatics. Using the latest operating systems, AirPods users can now gain access to custom equaliser settings, while AirPods Pro 3 owners can synchronise heart rate data during workouts through expanded GymKit functionality.
Much-enhanced Apple Maps
Apple Maps is also receiving an AI-powered upgrade through an enhanced Flyover feature that combines aerial imagery with artificial intelligence to deliver richer and more detailed city views.
The announcements form part of Apple`s next-generation software releases, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27, and tvOS 27, which are expected to roll out to users later this year.
With AI taking centre stage at WWDC 2026, Apple is positioning Siri and Apple Intelligence as the backbone of its ecosystem, aiming to deliver a more personalised, privacy-focused, and interconnected user experience across its devices.
When will new features be available to users?
The new features announced at the WWDC 2026 are available for testing starting today through the Apple Developer Program at developer.apple.com. The public beta for the latest software, iOS 27, will be available through the Apple Beta Software Program next month at beta.apple.com. New software features will be available as a free software update this fall.
iOS 27 with advanced AI features to be available in iPhones 16 and later
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 are available on iPhone 16 models or later, according to Apple.
Other important announcements
Siri AI will be available as a beta later in 2026 for users with a supported device set to English, and Apple will quickly expand support for more languages.
Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU will be able to access Siri AI when set to a supported language. Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS and iPadOS.
Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features will not be available in China while Apple works through regulatory requirements.
