The 72nd National Film Awards were held in Gujarat on Tuesday, September 22, where Malayalam superstar Mammootty won the Best Actor award for his performance as Kodumon Potti in the psychological horror film Bramayugam. The prestigious ceremony took place at Ekta Nagar in Kevadia, against the backdrop of the Statue of Unity.
Sporting a stylish white suit, the veteran recieved a standing ovation from the crowd as he took the stage. He shared the Best Actor award with Kartik Aaryan, who was conferred for Chandu Champion.

This marks Mammootty’s fourth National Film Award for Best Actor. Speaking about the recognition, the megastar said that the recognition remains an encouragement for any performer and credited the people who have supported him throughout his journey.

“It’s an inspiration to every performer to get recognised by the nation, and luckily I’m very fortunate to have my fourth National Award for Best Actor. It’s been a long journey with a lot of people behind me or supporting me: my directors, my writers, my co-actors, my producer, and the people who were appreciating me. I’m very happy that I could entertain them for such a long time and hope that I can do it more, more, and more times. I can only assure you that I’ll be working very hard to be there,” he said.
Mammootty previously won Best Actor for Mathilukal and Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha in 1990, Ponthan Mada and Vidheyan in 1994, and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in 1999. The actor has also been honoured with the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for Bramayugam in 2025.
Released in 2024, Bramayugam is a period folk horror film set in the backdrop against 17th-century Kerala. The film also earned Best Cinematography for Shehnad Jalal at the National Awards, becoming a two-award winner at the 72nd edition, with its monochrome feature playing a major role in achieving the milestone.
