H. Vinoth reveals how much of Jana Nayagan is inspired by Bhagavanth Kesari

After a seven-month delay, H. Vinoth’s Jana Nayagan is set to arrive in theatres on July 23. The film carries enormous expectations as it is being promoted as Vijay’s final screen appearance. Ahead of the film’s release, the director revealed how much of the original remains in Vijay’s much-awaited swansong and why he agreed to adapt the story despite his initial hesitation.
H. Vinoth on Jana Nayagan being Bhagavanth Kesari’s remake
Vinoth put a precise number on how much of the original remains. “Jana Nayagan is 50 percent of Bhagavanth Kesari. To be precise, the first half has 60 percent of the film, the second half has 20 percent,” he said.
The director also stated that after remaking Pink into Tamil as Nerkonda Paarvai with Ajith Kumar, he wasn’t really interested in doing another adaptation. However, Vijay told him that he really liked Bhagavanth Kesari and asked him to consider it. He eventually agreed because he did not want to miss the opportunity to work with Vijay. “One thing I admire about Vijay sir is that he’s deeply committed to women’s empowerment. I saw the same conviction in Ajith sir when we worked on the Pink remake. I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to work on Vijay sir’s last film,” explained Vinoth.
Rumours about the remake had gained momentum in January 2025 when actor VTV Ganesh claimed at an event that Vijay had watched Bhagavanth Kesari five times and wanted Anil Ravipudi to direct its Tamil version. Ganesh also said that Anil had declined the offer. Anil later clarified that he had never made such a statement.
More about Jana Nayagan
In a recent interview with Cinema Vikatan, Vinoth was asked about Jana Nayagan being Vijay’s last film. However, he had a different perspective and averred, “Whether this is really his last film, no one can say for sure. But you could say this is CM Vijay sir’s first film.”
Months after Jana Nayagan was leaked online in high definition ahead of its theatrical release, director H. Vinoth appealed to audiences to watch the Vijay-starrer in cinemas.
Jana Nayagan stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, Narain, and Nassar. After a seven-month delay, reportedly linked to certification issues, the film has received an A certificate from the CBFC.
