Suriya’s latest Tamil release, Vishwanath And Sons, has opened in theatres with a worldwide collection of over Rs 27 crore on its first day. However, despite the strong start, the Venky Atluri directorial has failed to surpass the opening-day numbers of Suriya’s previous blockbuster Karuppu.
Vishwanath And Sons day 1 collection
According to trade estimates cited by The Indian Express, Vishwanath And Sons earned approximately Rs 27.51 crore worldwide on Day 1. The film reportedly collected Rs 15.15 crore net in India, with the Tamil and Telugu versions contributing significantly to the opening. Tamil Nadu remained the film’s strongest market on its first day.
The opening comes after considerable anticipation surrounding Suriya’s return to the big screen following the success of Karuppu. Directed by RJ Balaji, Karuppu became a major commercial success earlier this year and eventually crossed the Rs 300 crore mark worldwide, emerging as Suriya’s highest-grossing film at the time.
Vishwanath And Sons, however, has begun its theatrical journey on a comparatively lower note. The film’s Day 1 worldwide collection is higher than Karuppu’s opening-day worldwide figure of around Rs 20.66 crore, according to earlier trade estimates, but the latest report notes that it has lagged behind some of Suriya’s more recent releases when comparing opening-day performance.
All about the film
Directed by Venky Atluri, the film presents Suriya in a different avatar. The actor plays Sanjay Vishwanath, an international pistol shooter navigating relationships, romance and family dynamics. The film also stars Mamitha Baiju, Radhika Sarathkumar and Raveena Tandon in prominent roles.
The family entertainer has generated attention for its lighter tone and emotional storytelling, with early audience responses reportedly encouraging. Suriya’s pairing with Mamitha Baiju is another key attraction, while Atluri’s reputation following films such as Vaathi and Lucky Baskhar had added to expectations before release.
The film’s pre-release business had also reportedly crossed Rs 200 crore, while advance bookings had surpassed Rs 7 crore ahead of its theatrical release. This raised expectations for a substantial opening and a strong weekend performance.
With positive word of mouth emerging, Vishwanath And Sons now has the crucial weekend ahead to build momentum. While its opening has not matched the heights expected after Karuppu’s success, the film’s Day 1 performance gives it a solid base for growth in the coming days.
