AMMA president Shweta Menon resigns; makes shocking allegations

In a dramatic development for the Malayalam film industry, actress Shweta Menon has resigned as president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), becoming the latest casualty of the organisation’s ongoing internal turmoil. Her exit comes less than a year after she made history by becoming AMMA’s first woman president.
According to reports, Menon announced her resignation during AMMA’s annual general body meeting, which witnessed heated discussions and sharp disagreements among members. The situation escalated after questions were reportedly raised regarding the association’s annual report and financial statements, leading to tense exchanges within the gathering.
Shweta Menon makes shocking revelations
Shweta Menon makes a shocking revelation, “From September 1 onwards, all our accounts were in order. I can only say that I am relieved that I am no longer an AMMA member.”
As reported by ANI, she further mentioned, “I have also come to believe, as some women stated earlier, there is an attempt to push the association into the hands of some accused individuals. I am not going to be someone’s play doll. And since we did not have any treasurer in our committee, we could not surface proper accounts. We pointed out all the mistakes, but the main mistake was from the previous committee, the accounts of which were all wrong. The dealings were in cash, less in white money. This was happening for many months. I am relieved to have come out of the committee. I am feeling bad for the people in the committee, apart from some of them.”

The actress, who had taken charge of the three-decade-old organisation in August 2025, also reportedly stepped down from her primary membership of AMMA. Her resignation was followed by the exit of the executive committee, further deepening the leadership crisis within the actors’ body.
Menon’s departure marks a significant setback for AMMA, which has been grappling with controversies and internal divisions in recent months. Earlier this year, the organisation found itself at the centre of disputes involving members, complaints, and allegations that intensified scrutiny on its leadership.
All about Shweta Menon’s controversial exit
In May, Menon had acknowledged the challenges of leading the association amid growing tensions. Addressing criticism and controversy surrounding the body, she said she often felt “cornered” and spoke about the difficulties women face in leadership positions. She also maintained that open discussions and transparency were necessary to resolve differences within the organisation.
Her election in 2025 had been hailed as a historic moment for Malayalam cinema. Alongside general secretary Cuckoo Parameswaran, Menon became part of the first all-women top leadership team in AMMA’s history. At the time, she had emphasised member welfare, safety, and accountability as key priorities of her administration.
The latest resignations have now left the future of AMMA uncertain, with questions emerging about how the organisation will move forward and restore stability. Industry observers believe fresh elections or administrative restructuring may be required to address the growing concerns among members.
As the Malayalam film fraternity reacts to the unexpected development, Menon’s resignation has become one of the most significant moments in AMMA’s recent history, underscoring the challenges faced by the organisation as it navigates a period of intense internal conflict and change.
